Turkish traditions and tradition surrounding the realm of love and wedding are strange to outsiders – and never just a little old fashioned

We explore dating, engagement, love and wedding in Turkey and all sorts of its glorious variety.

Dating in Turkey

In bigger towns, dating is much more calm. However in Turkey’s more rural communities the old traditions nevertheless go on: arranged marriages, strange rituals like womens’ single status being “advertised” with a bottle that is empty the roof of a property (a guy would knock the container down to become examined for wedding suitability – by the woman’s daddy, needless to say).

Generally speaking, even yet in bigger, less conservative towns and cities, dating is just an enterprise that is serious and there’sn’t a whole lot of casual dating going on. Oddly, an “ I love you” comes quite early on – also it’s accompanied by intimate gestures to show the effectiveness of your love. That might be plants, presents or big gestures that are romantic. This kind of behaviour is not only over the top – it’s a bit creepy to those of us coming from the western world. However in Turkey these gestures are believed sweet, and simply an indication of devotion. Needless to say, it is the man that does all of the playing around. Nevertheless, culture is evolving so that as Turkey grows into its twenty-first century epidermis, traditions are changing, with ladies moving from a passive to an energetic role – including within the world of courtship.
